Key Fact 1

See every prompt where ChatGPT names a competitor instead of you

Key Fact 2

Know which pages the answer is built from — yours or someone else's

Key Fact 3

Ship the fix from the same platform, then watch the answer change

Get retrieved

Clear the crawler blocks, rendering gaps and hidden pricing that keep your pages out of ChatGPT's source set.

Get cited

Publish pages built to be quoted, so the answer lifts your sentence instead of paraphrasing a competitor's.

Get chosen

Fix how the review sites and roundups ChatGPT trusts describe you against alternatives.

The problem: you cannot see the conversation you are losing

Search told you where you stood. A rank was public, a click was measurable, and a competitor moving above you was visible the day it happened. ChatGPT gives you none of that. Someone asks it which tool to use, it produces a paragraph naming three vendors, and unless you were one of them nothing about that exchange reaches your analytics.

The loss is invisible and it compounds. There is no impression count for an answer you were not in, no position to watch slide, and no referral to explain the gap. Most teams discover the problem the same way: a prospect mentions they asked an AI, it recommended a competitor, and nobody can say why.

How ChatGPT actually chooses what to cite

When a question needs current information, ChatGPT does not answer from memory. It runs a search, retrieves a small set of pages, reads them, and writes an answer grounded in what it just read — attaching citations to the sources that carried the load. Three things decide whether you are in that set.

Access. OpenAI reaches the web through its own user agents. If your robots.txt blocks them, or the answer only exists in JavaScript that never renders server-side, or it sits behind a form, you are not a candidate at all. This is the single most common failure and the cheapest to fix.

Extractability. Retrieval works on passages, not whole documents. A page that states the price, the limit or the difference in one clean sentence gives the model something to quote. A page that spreads the same information across a hero animation, a pricing toggle and a footnote gives it nothing to lift.

Corroboration. Models weight claims that appear consistently across independent sources. If your own site says one thing and every review site, forum thread and roundup says another, the model follows the crowd — because agreement across sources is the closest thing it has to a truth signal.

What this changes about your site

Pages built to rank were built to win a click. The headline created curiosity, the detail sat below the fold, and the specifics lived on a page you had to navigate to. That structure is actively hostile to retrieval, because the model never scrolls, never clicks, and never fills in a form.

Pages built to be cited invert it. The answer goes first, in plain language, with the number attached. Definitions are stated rather than implied. Comparisons name the alternative instead of gesturing at “other tools.” Caveats are written down, because a model that finds your limitation stated honestly will quote your framing of it rather than a competitor's.

None of this costs you the human reader. It is the same discipline good documentation has always had — say the thing, then explain it.

Where most brands actually lose

Almost nobody loses on the homepage. They lose in three predictable places.

Comparison queries. “X vs Y” and “best tool for Z” get answered from roundups and comparison pages, most of which you did not write and several of which are out of date about your product.

Pricing questions. If your pricing page hides numbers behind a demo request, the model fills the gap with a third-party guess — often a stale one, and rarely flattering.

Category definitions. If you are inventing or renaming a category, the model needs a source that defines it. Absent one, you get filed under whatever adjacent category has the clearest definition, which is usually a competitor's.

How to get cited in ChatGPT

Find the prompts that decide your category

Start from the questions a buyer actually types, not keywords. Record what ChatGPT answers today, which sources it cites, and which competitors it names before you change anything — you need a baseline to prove movement against.

Make yourself retrievable

Confirm OpenAI's crawlers are allowed, that key pages render server-side, and that the answers are in the HTML rather than behind interaction. Fix this before writing anything new; content the crawler cannot reach cannot be cited.

Publish answer-shaped pages

One page per real question, answering it in the opening paragraph, with prices, limits and comparisons stated explicitly. Add FAQ and structured data so the passage boundaries are unambiguous.

Fix the sources that describe you

Update the roundups, review profiles and forum threads that ChatGPT retrieves alongside your own pages. Corroboration across independent sources is what moves an answer, and it is the slowest part — start it early.

Retrievability checklist

Checklist 1

OpenAI crawlers are allowed in robots.txt and not blocked at the CDN or WAF

Checklist 2

Key answers render in server-side HTML, not only after JavaScript or interaction

Checklist 3

Prices, limits and plan differences are written as text, not locked behind a demo form

Checklist 4

Every commercial page opens with a direct answer before the pitch

Checklist 5

Third-party roundups and review profiles describe your product accurately and recently

Can you pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?

Not for organic answers. Citations come from retrieval, so the levers are access, clarity and corroboration — not spend. Advertising inside AI products is emerging separately and is not the same surface as the cited answer.

How long does it take to change what ChatGPT says?

Fixes on your own site can surface within days once the pages are recrawled. Changing how third-party sources describe you is slower, usually weeks to months, because it depends on other people's publishing schedules.

Does traditional SEO still matter for this?

Yes. Retrieval leans on search infrastructure, so crawlability, site health and topical authority still carry weight. What changes is the target: you are optimising to be quoted, not to be clicked.

Should I block AI crawlers to protect my content?

That is a real trade-off, but understand the cost. Blocking OpenAI's crawlers removes you from consideration in ChatGPT answers entirely, including the answers that would have recommended you.

How do I know if any of this worked?

Track the prompts, not the pages. Re-run the same buyer questions on a schedule and record whether you are named, whether you are cited, and which sources the answer leaned on. That is the only feedback loop that reflects what a buyer sees.

What goes wrong for brands in ChatGPT?

Every answer is assembled from public sources the model already trusts. Where those sources are thin, stale or wrong, the model repeats the error to every buyer who asks.

Challenge 1

OpenAI's crawlers are blocked, so your pages are never candidates for citation

Challenge 2

Key answers live behind JavaScript, forms or demo requests the crawler cannot open

Challenge 3

Review sites and listicles outrank your own product pages as the model's source

Challenge 4

Pricing is quoted from a third-party guess because your own page hides the number

Challenge 5

Competitors are named in answers about the category you built

Everything you need to win ChatGPT

Prompt tracking, source analysis, technical fixes and answer-shaped content in one platform — measurement and execution in the same place.

Prompt tracking

Monitor the buying questions that matter in ChatGPT and record whether you are named, cited or missing from each answer.

Source analysis

See exactly which pages the answer leans on — yours, a competitor's, or a review site you have never edited.

Retrievability fixes

Detect crawler blocks, client-side rendering and hidden pricing that keep your pages out of the retrieved set, then deploy the fix.

Answer-shaped content

Publish pages built to be quoted — direct answers, explicit numbers, stated caveats — straight into your CMS.

Do I need to change my whole site?

No. Most gains come from a handful of commercial pages plus fixing crawler access. Citera prioritises by which prompts you are losing, so the work starts where it pays.

Other solutions

Category defence

Find every prompt where ChatGPT names a competitor for the category you built, and close the gap page by page.

Pricing accuracy

Stop the model quoting a stale third-party guess by making your real numbers readable on your own pages.

Launch visibility

Get a new product into the retrieved set quickly instead of waiting for review sites to catch up.

Agency reporting

Show clients which prompts they win, which they lose, and which sources decide it.

Competitive intel

Track when a rival starts appearing in answers you used to own, and see what changed.

Content prioritisation

Write the pages that answer real prompts instead of guessing from keyword volume.

From invisible to cited, on autopilot
