TL;DR
Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit is $99 a month per domain on annual billing, covering ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini and Perplexity with 25 tracked prompts and one domain. Extra prompts are $60 per 50, extra domains $99, extra users from $45. Bundled as Semrush One, the entry is $199 a month. Citera is $219 a month, tracks all AI models, and executes: it deploys technical fixes, publishes to your CMS and posts to Reddit, Quora and LinkedIn. Semrush wins on classic SEO depth, historical data and procurement comfort. Citera wins on engine coverage, prompt headroom and doing the work. Neither replaces the other cleanly.
OUR PRODUCT
Where Citera fits
Citera assumes the recommendation is the easy part. It connects to your site, analytics and social accounts in roughly two minutes, then fixes the technical issues, writes the content, publishes it into your CMS, and posts to Reddit, Quora and LinkedIn. Approval is a toggle and it is off by default. All AI models, all countries and all languages are available on every plan, including the $219 tier. What it does not have is Semrush's decade of keyword and backlink history, or its security paperwork.
Why this comparison exists
Nobody sets out to compare an SEO suite with an AI visibility platform. What happens is that AI answers start eating a measurable share of clicks, someone asks what Citera is doing about it, and two options land on the table: add the module to the tool already in place, or buy something built for this.
That framing is the useful one, and it is why price alone answers nothing. $99 versus $219 looks decisive until you notice the two numbers buy different verbs. Semrush's toolkit tells you what AI engines say. Citera changes what they say. A team with three people idle and no data should buy the cheaper one. A team drowning in recommendations nobody has time to ship should not.
Pricing: what the two numbers actually include
Semrush’s AI Visibility Toolkit is $99 a month per domain, and that figure is the annual-billing rate published on its pricing page. It covers 25 custom prompts with daily AI rankings, AI visibility reports for any domain, one domain for Brand Performance analysis, an AI-readiness site audit, and 300 reports a day.
The add-on is not a plan. It sits on top of a core Semrush subscription, so the real monthly cost is your existing plan plus $99. Semrush publishes SEO Pro at $139.95 a month, which puts the honest combined figure near $239. Semrush One Starter bundles both from $199 a month, which is the cheaper route if you are buying fresh.
Expansion is metered. Another 50 prompts is $60 a month. Another domain is $99 a month. Extra users start at $45 a month. A two-brand, two-market team tracking 100 prompts is not on a $99 bill any more.
Citera is $219 a month with all AI models, every country and every language included, and no per-domain add-on. Citera’s upper tier is $399. Billing is monthly rolling with a 90-day money-back guarantee. Semrush publishes a 7-day free trial and no guarantee; Citera publishes a 3-day trial and the guarantee.
Coverage: engines, prompts and domains
Semrush’s toolkit reports mentions from ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini and Perplexity. That is four surfaces, and it covers the ones most B2B buyers actually use. Claude, Grok, Meta AI and DeepSeek are not part of it.
Citera tracks all AI models, and adds the long tail that shows up in specific categories — Claude for technical buyers, Copilot inside Microsoft shops, Grok and Meta AI where audiences skew consumer.
Prompts are the sharper difference. 25 tracked prompts is enough to watch a category, not enough to watch a category and its subsegments and your competitors’ territory. At $60 per additional 50, a serious prompt set on Semrush lands somewhere between $159 and $219 a month for the toolkit alone — the point at which the price comparison stops flattering it.
Classic SEO depth: Semrush wins this outright
This is not a close section and it would be dishonest to stage it as one. Semrush has a backlink index, keyword database, rank tracking history and site audit built over nearly two decades. If you need to know which pages lost positions in March, what a competitor's paid keyword mix looks like, or which referring domains they gained last quarter, Semrush answers that and Citera does not.
Citera has backlink capability and technical checks, but it is not a keyword research suite and pretending otherwise would waste your evaluation. Teams whose organic programme still lives mostly in classic search should keep a suite, and the real question becomes whether that suite's AI module is enough on top.
AI-specific measurement: closer than the price suggests
On the AI side the toolkit is genuinely capable: prompt-level rankings updated daily, competitor share of the answer, brand performance, sentiment signals and an audit for whether AI crawlers can read your site. For a reporting layer, that covers the questions a marketing lead actually asks.
Where it thins out is depth per prompt. Citera reports which sources the answer leaned on, tracks changes at citation level, and keeps every country and language on the same plan. Semrush's prompt research is a research tool rather than a record of observed conversations — worth knowing if someone in the room presents it as demand data.
Execution: the actual dividing line
Semrush reports. It will tell you that a competitor is cited where you are not, that your product page cannot be parsed cleanly, that a prompt you care about names three rivals and not you. What happens next is a ticket, a brief, a writer, a developer and three weeks.
Citera closes that loop by default. Technical fixes deploy automatically with rollback. Content is written and published into WordPress, Webflow, Framer, Wix or Shopify. Third-party surfaces get worked directly — Reddit, Quora and LinkedIn posts, because AI answers lean on those pages more than on yours.
If you have a team that executes well and is only missing the read, this section is irrelevant and Semrush is the better-value purchase. If your recommendation backlog is already the bottleneck, buying a tool that produces more recommendations makes the backlog worse.

Semrush is the cheapest credible way to start measuring AI visibility if you already pay for Semrush: $99 a month on top of your plan, four engines, 25 prompts, one domain. It reports and stops there. Citera costs $219 a month standalone, tracks all AI models, and writes, fixes and publishes rather than filing a recommendation. If your bottleneck is knowing, Semrush is the better buy. If your bottleneck is doing, the add-on will not solve it.
These two products get shortlisted together for a reason that has nothing to do with them being alike. Semrush is a nineteen-year-old SEO suite that added an AI Visibility Toolkit as a paid module; Citera is a two-year-old platform built for AI search that also does the execution. One is an extra line on an invoice you already approve. The other is a new vendor that replaces work rather than reporting on it. The comparison below is about which bottleneck you actually have.

Founding team sets up Enterprise

Citera
Tracks and improves how brands appear across AI search
Strengths
Publishes to your CMS and posts to Reddit, Quora and LinkedIn
Deploys technical site fixes automatically, with rollback
All countries and languages on every plan, including the $219 tier
Limitations
Prompt-demand data is an approximation model, not observed conversations
No SOC 2 Type II; three-person team founded 2025
Less historical depth than platforms collecting since 2024

Semrush
Established SEO suite with AI search features
Strengths
The deepest classic SEO dataset of any tool here: keywords, backlinks, rank tracking and site audit with years of history
AI visibility costs $99 a month to add on top of a plan most SEO teams already pay for
Procurement-friendly: public company, established security posture, no vendor-risk conversation
Limitations
Reports only — nothing is written, fixed or published for you
25 prompts and one domain on the base toolkit; prompts cost $60 per 50 after that
AI visibility sits in a separate toolkit, so real cost is plan plus add-on plus seats
Which should you choose

Citera
Nobody on your team has hours each week to act on findings. You want more than four engines watched, and more than 25 prompts without a metered upgrade. You operate in several countries or languages and do not want that priced per domain. You would rather content got written, published and posted than described in a recommendation queue. You want a 90-day money-back guarantee and monthly rolling billing rather than an annual rate that only holds if you commit.

Semrush
You already pay for Semrush, in which case $99 a month is the cheapest AI visibility data you will find. You need real classic SEO depth — backlink index, rank tracking history, competitive keyword research — which Citera does not attempt to match. Your procurement wants a public company with an established security record; Citera has no SOC 2 Type II and a three-person team. You have people whose job is to act on reports, so a measurement layer is genuinely all you are missing. You want years of historical trend data, not a platform that started collecting in 2025.
How we compared
Every Semrush figure comes from the AI Visibility Toolkit pricing page as published on 14 August 2026, and every Citera figure from Citera’s pricing page on the same date. Where Semrush publishes no number, the cell reads Unknown rather than assuming a gap in Citera’s favour. Prices exclude tax and reflect the billing terms each vendor advertises: the $99 toolkit price is Semrush's annual-billing rate, so month-to-month buyers should expect to pay more. Citera is one of the two products on this page and the rows below include several where Citera trails.
