TL;DR

Ahrefs plans run $129 Lite, $249 Standard, $449 Advanced and $1,499 Enterprise, with 5, 10 and 20 tracked AI prompts respectively. Brand Radar covers AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok, drawing on 466M+ monthly prompts, and full Brand Radar AI access starts from $199 a month on top of a plan. There is no free trial, though a free tier and Webmaster Tools exist. Citera is $219 a month, all AI models, all countries and languages on every plan, and it deploys fixes, publishes content and posts to Reddit, Quora and LinkedIn. Ahrefs wins on data depth and verification; Citera wins on prompt headroom and execution.

OUR PRODUCT

Where Citera fits

Citera is built for teams whose problem is capacity, not information. It connects in about two minutes, then deploys technical fixes with rollback, writes and publishes content into your CMS, and posts to Reddit, Quora and LinkedIn — the third-party surfaces AI answers lean on most. All AI models, every country and every language, on every plan including the $219 tier. What it will not give you is Ahrefs' link graph or fifteen years of crawl history.

Why this comparison exists

Ahrefs earned trust by being unusually careful with data, so when it shipped AI answer tracking, a lot of teams reasonably assumed the AI question was now handled by a tool they already had.

Mostly it is handled — for reading. The numbers are real, the surfaces are broad, and the prompt database is large. What the plan tiers reveal is how Ahrefs frames the feature: 5 tracked AI prompts on Lite, 10 on Standard, 20 on Advanced. Those are sampling allowances, not monitoring allowances, and full access is a separate purchase. That framing is the comparison.

Pricing: plans, prompts and the add-on

Ahrefs publishes Lite at $129 a month with 5 projects, 750 tracked keywords and 5 tracked AI prompts; Standard at $249 with 20 projects, 2,000 keywords and 10 AI prompts; Advanced at $449 with 50 projects, 5,000 keywords and 20 AI prompts; and Enterprise at $1,499 with uncapped API access and an annual commitment. A separate Starter plan is $29 a month for keyword and competitor research.

Brand Radar is included on plans, but full Brand Radar AI — all platforms, all 466M+ organic prompts, plus custom prompts — starts from $199 a month per Ahrefs’ pricing page, and the Brand Radar page itself splits select-platform and all-platform tiers. Regional pricing means the figure you see depends on where you browse.

So a team that wants proper AI monitoring plus normal SEO work is realistically looking at $249 plus $199, or around $448 a month. Citera is $219 with all AI models included, or $399 for the top tier with 200 prompts and five seats. No free trial is published for Ahrefs plans, though the free tier and Webmaster Tools let you inspect data before paying — genuinely more useful than Citera’s 3-day trial.

Coverage: engines and prompt headroom

Brand Radar tracks AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok. That is six surfaces and it includes two Citera does not lead on, Grok among them. Claude, Meta AI and DeepSeek are absent.

Citera tracks all AI models, and includes Claude — which matters more than it sounds if you sell to engineering teams.

Prompt headroom is where the products diverge sharply. Twenty tracked AI prompts on a $449 plan will cover a category’s headline questions and nothing else. Citera’s $399 tier carries 200. If your monitoring plan involves subsegments, competitor territory and long-tail buying questions, Ahrefs pushes you towards the add-on quickly.

Data depth: Ahrefs wins this outright

This section is not competitive and staging it as one would insult your time. Ahrefs runs one of the largest web crawlers in existence, its backlink index is the reference point for the industry, and it has years of historical data behind rankings and referring domains.

Its prompt database is also larger than anything Citera has: 466M+ monthly prompts against Citera’s approximation model. When the comparison states Citera’s prompt-demand figures are modelled rather than observed, this is the contrast that makes it matter.

If your question is who links to a competitor, which pages lost positions, or how a market's keyword landscape shifted over three years, buy Ahrefs. Citera has no answer that competes.

AI measurement: strong reading, thin acting

Brand Radar reports mentions, citations and competitive position across its six surfaces, and adds YouTube, TikTok and Reddit tracking, currently free while in beta. As a reading layer for AI visibility it is credible and its numbers are traceable.

Citera reports the same class of metric with two differences: more engines, and every finding is wired to an action. Where Brand Radar tells you a Reddit thread is being cited instead of your product page, Citera posts to that thread. Neither approach is inherently better; one is a research tool and one is an operator.

Execution: the dividing line

Ahrefs does not publish content, deploy fixes or post to third-party platforms. It never claimed to. Its Site Audit will tell you precisely what is wrong, and then the work is yours.

Citera's default is the opposite. Technical fixes deploy with rollback. Content is written and pushed into WordPress, Webflow, Framer, Wix or Shopify. Reddit, Quora and LinkedIn get worked directly.

Decide honestly which side of that line your team sits on. Teams with a developer and a writer who both have capacity get more from Ahrefs' depth. Teams whose audit findings have sat in a backlog since March are buying the wrong thing if they buy more findings.

Ahrefs is the better tool for classic SEO and it is not close: the backlink index, the crawler and the free tier have no equivalent here. Its AI coverage is real too, with six surfaces in Brand Radar on a 466M+ prompt database. The catch is scale and posture: 5 tracked AI prompts on the $129 plan, 20 on the $449 plan, full Brand Radar AI as a separate add-on from $199 a month, and nothing gets fixed, written or posted for you. Citera is $219 flat, all AI models, and executes by default.

Ahrefs is a data company. Its reputation rests on crawling the web at scale and being right about links, and Brand Radar is that same instinct applied to AI answers — measure everything, publish the numbers, let the user decide. Citera is a different bet: fewer datasets, far more automation, and the assumption that the report is worthless if nobody ships against it. Both are defensible. They fail different teams.

Strengths

Publishes to your CMS and posts to Reddit, Quora and LinkedIn

Deploys technical site fixes automatically, with rollback

All countries and languages on every plan, including the $219 tier

Limitations

Strengths

Brand Radar covers six AI surfaces including Grok and Copilot, on a 466M+ prompt database

A genuinely free tier plus Webmaster Tools, so you can verify the data before paying

Limitations

5 tracked AI prompts on the $129 plan, 20 on the $449 plan — AI is a feature, not the product

Full Brand Radar AI is a separate add-on from $199/mo on top of a plan

No execution: nothing is published, posted or deployed for you

Which should you choose

Citera

Your prompt set is bigger than 20 and you do not want it metered by plan tier. You need Claude tracked, which Brand Radar does not cover. You want the fixes deployed, the content published and the third-party posts written rather than a list of citation gaps. You work across several countries and languages and want that included rather than priced. You want monthly rolling billing with a 90-day money-back guarantee.

Ahrefs

Links and rankings still drive most of your organic programme — the backlink index is the best in the category and Citera does not try to compete with it. You want to validate a tool's data before paying, which Ahrefs' free tier lets you do and Citera's 3-day trial barely does. You need Grok tracked. You want years of historical trend data. Your procurement prefers an established, profitable vendor over a three-person company with no SOC 2 Type II.

How we compared

Ahrefs figures come from its published pricing and Brand Radar pages as read on 14 August 2026; Citera figures from Citera’s pricing page the same day. Brand Radar's page displays prices in local currency depending on where you browse, so the comparison cites the from-$199 figure Ahrefs publishes on its pricing page and note the all-platforms tier costs more. Where Ahrefs publishes nothing, the cell reads Unknown. Citera is one of the two products compared and several rows go against Citera.
