CITERA :: SOLUTIONS
Win the answer above the results
AI Overviews answer the query before anyone scrolls, using pages Google already ranks. Citera finds which of your queries trigger one, who gets cited, and restructures your pages so the lifted passage is yours.

Key Fact 1
Rankings can hold while clicks fall — the Overview took the answer
Key Fact 2
Overviews lift passages, not pages, so structure decides who gets quoted
Key Fact 3
Track Overview presence separately, or the work looks like it failed
See what changed
Find which queries now return an Overview, who is cited in it, and whether your page made the cut.
Win the passage
Restructure headings into questions with complete answers underneath, so the liftable block is unmistakable.
Hold the expansion
Answer the sub-questions Overviews branch into and stay present as the user opens it further.
The problem: ranking first is no longer being first
You can hold position one and still lose the click. AI Overviews render above the organic results and answer the query in place, so the user reads the summary, gets what they came for, and never scrolls. Your ranking did not move. Your traffic did.
This hits informational queries hardest — definitions, comparisons, how-tos — which is exactly the content most teams built their organic strategy on. The page still ranks, the impression still counts, and the click quietly disappears.
How Google builds an AI Overview
An Overview is generated per query from pages in Google's existing index, weighted toward results already ranking well for that query and its variants. That makes this the most continuous of the AI surfaces with traditional SEO — but the unit of selection changes.
Ranking is the entry ticket. Pages outside the top results are rarely pulled into the Overview. If you are on page three, no amount of answer-shaping helps yet; the ranking work comes first.
Passages win, not pages. Google lifts the specific block that answers the question. A page can rank well and still be passed over because its answer is spread across three paragraphs and a table nobody can quote in isolation.
Corroboration decides ties. Where sources disagree, Google leans toward the claim supported across several trusted pages. Being the only site making a claim is a weak position, however true it is.
What this changes about your pages
Lead with the answer. The first 40-60 words after a heading should answer the heading's question completely, with the specifics attached — the number, the timeframe, the exception. Everything else on the page can stay as it is.
Use headings as questions. An H2 phrased as the query, followed immediately by the answer, gives Google an unambiguous passage boundary. This is the single highest-leverage edit on most existing pages.
Then accept the traffic shift and plan for it. Informational queries will bleed clicks whatever you do. The counter is to be inside the Overview on those, and to own the commercial queries — comparisons, pricing, alternatives — where users still click through to decide.
Where teams get this wrong
The common mistake is treating AI Overviews as a new channel with its own playbook. It is not. It is a rendering layer on top of the index you already compete in, so the work is ranking plus structure, not ranking or structure.
The second mistake is measuring only clicks. When an Overview cites you, the value is the visibility and the credibility of being the quoted source — a metric that never appears in a traffic report. Track presence in the Overview separately from sessions, or you will conclude the work failed while it is working.
How to win AI Overviews
Find which queries trigger an Overview
Run your priority queries and record which return an Overview, who is cited, and whether your page appears. Overviews do not fire on every query — start where they do.
Earn the ranking first
Overviews draw from pages already ranking. If you are not on page one for the query, the ranking work is the prerequisite, not an alternative to it.
Restructure the answer
Turn key headings into the question, answer it in the following 40-60 words with the specifics attached, and keep one idea per passage so the liftable block is obvious.
Cover the expansion questions
Overviews branch into related sub-questions. Map them and make sure your page or a closely linked one answers each, so you stay present as the user expands the answer.

Do AI Overviews replace SEO?
No — they raise the stakes on it. Overviews are assembled from pages Google already ranks, so ranking remains the entry condition. What changes is that ranking alone no longer guarantees the click.
Can I opt out of AI Overviews?
You can use nosnippet-style controls to limit how your content is used, but doing so removes you from the Overview while it still appears for the query, built from competitors. That is usually a worse position than being cited.
Why did my traffic drop while rankings held?
That is the signature pattern of an Overview capturing the query. The impression stays, the click goes. Check whether an Overview now fires for your top informational queries before assuming a ranking problem.
Which queries are safest from Overviews?
Transactional and comparison queries where users want to evaluate options themselves, and anything requiring a login, a quote or a personalised answer. Informational queries are the most exposed.
How long does it take to appear in an Overview?
Once the ranking exists, structural edits can surface within a recrawl cycle — often days to a few weeks. If the ranking is not there yet, plan on the usual SEO timeline first.

What goes wrong for brands in AI Overviews?
The Overview answers the query above your listing, using pages Google already ranks. You can hold position one, stay perfectly visible, and still lose the click.
Challenge 1
Traffic falls on informational queries while rankings stay exactly where they were
Challenge 2
Answers are spread across the page, so there is no clean passage to lift
Challenge 3
Headings are written as marketing lines instead of the question being asked
Challenge 4
Competitors are cited in the Overview for queries you rank above them on
Challenge 5
Nobody tracks which queries now trigger an Overview at all
Everything you need to win AI Overviews
Overview detection, passage optimisation, ranking support and expansion coverage — the structural work and the content work in one place.
Overview detection
Track which of your target queries return an AI Overview and whether your page is among the cited sources.
Passage optimisation
Restructure headings into questions with complete 40-60 word answers underneath, so the liftable block is obvious.
Ranking support
Overviews draw from pages already ranking, so the technical and content work that earns the ranking runs alongside it.
Expansion coverage
Answer the sub-questions Overviews branch into, keeping you present as the user opens the answer further.
Will schema markup get me into an Overview?
Schema helps Google parse the page, but it is not a ticket in. Ranking for the query and having a clean, liftable answer passage matter more.
Other solutions
Traffic diagnosis
Separate an Overview capturing your query from an actual ranking drop.
Passage rewrites
Restructure existing pages so the answer sits in one liftable block.
Query triage
Find which informational queries are exposed and which commercial ones still click through.
Competitive citation
See who Google cites instead of you, and what their page does differently.
Content structure
Publish new pages already shaped for passage selection.
Reporting
Report Overview presence separately from sessions so the work is not judged on clicks alone.
