Answer engine optimization, or AEO, helps people discover and understand your brand through AI-generated answers. In 2026, the practical job is to make useful content accessible, keep business facts accurate, earn credible references, and turn discovery into qualified traffic and customers.
This briefing combines current platform documentation, published research, and Citera’s recommendations as of September 14, 2026. It focuses on decisions a marketing team can make now. Research dates and measurement limits are stated beside the findings.
SEO still underpins AI discovery
Google says existing SEO practices apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode. A supporting page must be indexed and eligible for a search snippet; there is no extra AI schema or special AI file required. Eligibility does not guarantee inclusion. Google Search Central.
That makes technical health and clear answers useful starting points. Check whether important pages can be discovered and read, whether their links work, and whether a prospective customer can understand the offer. A broken booking form still loses the enquiry, regardless of how the visitor found you.
Our recommendation is to maintain one organic-growth backlog across traditional search and AI discovery. Prioritize work that improves the customer’s decision: accurate product details, helpful comparisons, clear service areas, useful examples, and credible evidence.
A citation is not a customer
Pew Research Center analyzed browsing data from 900 U.S. adults in March 2025. Traditional-result clicks occurred on 8% of Google visits with an AI summary, compared with 15% without one; a summary-source link was clicked on 1% of visits with a summary. Search results were collected in April 2025, after the observed browsing period. Read Pew’s study and method.
This is a dated, observational Google study, not a 2026 traffic forecast for every website or AI platform. Query mix and the later collection of search results matter. It supports a narrow conclusion: citation exposure and a website visit are different outcomes.
For your business, measure each stage. Visibility answers whether you appear. Referral traffic answers whether people arrive. Qualified enquiries and sales answer whether that traffic helps the business. A single visibility percentage cannot stand in for all three.
Measurement is becoming more direct
On February 10, 2026, Microsoft introduced AI Performance in Bing Webmaster Tools as a public preview. The report exposes citations, cited pages, and grounding-query information across supported Microsoft AI experiences. Its launch guidance explicitly distinguishes citation frequency from ranking or placement. Microsoft’s announcement.
Alongside these platform reports, a fixed prompt panel can show whether your brand is mentioned, accurately described, and recommended for the needs you serve. Record the product, mode, market, date, question, and full answer. Check changes across repeated runs rather than celebrating a single favorable response.
Use platform data and your prompt panel for their different purposes. Neither is a census of all buying journeys. Segment branded questions from category questions, keep the competitor set stable, and retain the raw counts behind every percentage. Our AI visibility benchmark guide includes definitions and a worked example.
Crawler access needs a clear policy
Search discovery and model training are separate controls. OpenAI identifies OAI-SearchBot for search discovery and GPTBot for potential training. Allowing one is not the same decision as allowing the other. OpenAI’s publisher FAQ.
Perplexity similarly describes PerplexityBot as a search crawler, distinct from its user-requested fetcher. Its documentation recommends checking both robots.txt and firewall access against the published IP ranges. Perplexity crawler documentation.
For a public commercial page, make the access decision deliberately and verify the response in your logs. Check for challenges, authentication walls, accidental noindex directives, and inconsistent canonical URLs. Do not expose private or customer-only material to make it discoverable.
Useful evidence earns attention
Google’s content guidance asks whether a page adds original value, explains its sources, and leaves a reader able to achieve their goal. It also warns against changing dates merely to make unchanged content look fresh. Google’s people-first content guidance.
Our editorial rule is simple: every important page should help with a real decision and make its key claims checkable. Add the detail a buyer needs to compare options, understand a limitation, or take the next step.
Service pages: explain the work, who it suits, what is included, and what happens after an enquiry.
Comparisons: state the criteria, verify facts, show trade-offs, and disclose your own commercial interest.
Case studies: name the measurement window, starting point, work performed, metric definition, and evidence that can be shared.
Guides: answer the main question early, demonstrate the process, and include examples specific enough to use.
Business profiles and third-party references: keep public facts consistent, correct errors, and contribute where your expertise is relevant.
Refresh content when facts, products, customer questions, or the evidence change. Combine overlapping pages when they serve the same need. Publish a new page when it adds a distinct answer. Content volume on its own is an activity count, not an organic-growth outcome.
Make execution the operating model
A useful monitoring report should lead to a specific piece of work. For every gap, record the customer question, the page or channel involved, what will change, who owns it, and how you will evaluate the result.
For example, an incorrect answer about service availability calls for correcting the source facts. A weak comparison answer may call for a better comparison page. Traffic arriving at a confusing pricing page calls for clearer pricing and a working next step. More articles are not the answer to every problem.
Citera connects that process across content, publishing, website fixes, distribution, and ongoing updates. Teams set the channels and approval rules: allow selected work to run automatically, require review, or keep a channel in draft mode. The objective is steady organic growth across Google and AI discovery, with execution tied to the plan.

Your next 30 days
Week 1: establish the baseline
Choose one priority audience and market. Gather real buying questions, capture a first repeatable AI-answer sample, and record current organic clicks, referral visits, and qualified conversions. Audit the core product, pricing, contact, and signup journeys. The output is a baseline and a short list of problems.
Week 2: repair the decision pages
Fix factual inaccuracies, broken links, unclear pricing, and missing evidence on pages buyers already visit. Make each page’s primary action clear and test it on mobile. Record each published change so later movement has a timeline.
Week 3: fill specific content gaps
Create or improve the comparisons, guides, examples, and answers your baseline shows are missing. Link them from relevant existing pages. Use original experience or verifiable sources, and distribute through channels appropriate to the audience and your approval settings.
Week 4: review and prioritize again
Repeat the same measurement conditions. Review changed answers, source URLs, organic traffic, and conversion quality together. Keep useful work, revise weak pages, and choose the next priorities. Thirty days establishes a working cycle; it is not a guaranteed ranking or revenue deadline.
Questions buyers should ask
Does AEO replace SEO?
Treat AEO as an additional discovery and measurement layer in your organic-growth strategy. Maintain the technical and editorial work that helps people find, understand, and use your website.
Do we need to publish every day?
Choose a cadence you can support with useful, accurate work. The next best task may be updating an existing page, fixing a conversion problem, or producing one strong comparison. Set publishing volume around customer needs and review capacity.
Can anyone guarantee an AI recommendation?
A provider can commit to work, review processes, and reporting. It cannot control every engine’s answer. Ask for a clear scope, metric definitions, approval controls, and evidence for outcome claims before buying.
